Useful comparison. IMO some of the intropamt advantages of Preon include: Just in time data decoding (not all at once), extensibility and definition of dependencies between fields. Compared to Protocol Buffers, Preon lacks the concept of a "contract" (e.g. IDL like specification) that might be intropamt if used in heterogeneous environment. Perhaps it is possible to produce a "contract" from the annotations. I presume that the missing encoding functionality is just a matter of time and resources ;)
